Like most log cabins, River Woods was a realization of childhood dreams. After all, who hasn't at one time in their life wanted to live in a log cabin?

The dream, long slumbering underneath years of stress and "priorities", came alive in October 2004 when we first drove across the Shenandoah River to view the hardwood and pine-covered 5.88 acres that is now home to River Woods. Driving up to the property was like in the 1988 movie Funny Farm, starring Chevy Chase - deer, turkeys, and pileated woodpeckers appearing as if cued by some hidden director. Fall leaves were in full display of color, and no noise could be heard except for the rustling of drying leaves driven by cool gentle breezes. However, this was no choreographed production, only nature greeting its soon-to-be new neighbors. That day, that moment, began a four-year journey of planning, designing and building - making a dream come true.

In Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In the woods, we return to reason and faith." And that has become the mission of River Woods, to help people find the quietness in which to reflect on the things that matter most in life.

Since its completion in the summer of 2008, River Woods has become a place to relax and reflect upon God's wonderful creation. It has served as a romantic getaway for many couples as well as the base camp for adventure vacations of hiking, canoeing and tubing, mountain biking, horseback riding and marathon running. It has become a second home for families who need an escape from the rat race of our nation's capital.

It has served as a place for rest and recuperation for war-weary service members visiting their families while on leave from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it has been a place of solace for families grieving the loss of a loved one.

Music groups and writers have used River Woods and the beautiful natural surroundings as a place of inspiration for their songs, prose and poetry.

River Woods has served to reunite geopraphically-dispersed high school and college friends and as a place of celebration for engagements, weddings and birthdays.

As owners of River Woods, we have greatly enjoyed knowing that our second home has brought joy to so many and look forward to hearing from future guests on what River Woods has meant to them.
